Behind it All
The Crane Project
It started in the the summer of 2004...roughly July-August time. It was a genius plan, concocted by my best friend Elie, in order to preserve my feelings of self-worth and encourage me to continue drawing. The plan was simple. Every time I drew a picture, if it turned out less than satisfactory to me, I could fold it into a paper crane, and when there was 1,000 altogether, I could make a wish, like in the book about Sadako, the girl who was dying of Leukemia (I believe) and wanted to make 1000 cranes before she died so she could wish for something. It's based on japanese legend, I think. In any case, I was pretty excited about this project when it began, and still continue it. It has helped me come a long way in both my art and the way I see myself as a person. There are less days where I'm beating myself up about my shortcomings and feeling less than good about myself, and more days when I'm cheerful and ready to keep trying at all the various things I try to do. So it truly was a great idea, and still is.
