The Child

Wearing holes in the floor
Pacing up and down in the dark
Pacing slow, beyond my door
Humming, singing softly while it pours
I roll over, face buried in arms
One eye closed, one open to see
The sound of your sighs
You sigh and sing
While the child cries...
...and strangles all your lullabyes.

This began once
Once upon a time
Once that place in your arms was mine
I was the child
That child was once me
That child you sang to sleep

Tearing holes with their cries
Racing back and forth out of reach
I cannot yet close my eyes
Burning, cold and weary, full of lies
I look over, but you are still out
One hand closed, one reaching to find
You, holding my head
As time unwinds
It's time for bed...
...My stories told, voice dull and dead

This began once
Once upon a time
Once each joy in the world was mine
I was a child
A child who cried
A child you sang to sleep

I watch them dream
What am I now?
A child, a parent?
Both somehow...
They need their dreams
I need them too
The dreams that I once told to you...

Laa-a
Laa-aa-a
I...
Was..
A child..
Once...
Laa-a
Laa-a-aa-a
Once...
That child..
Was me...

Wearing colors of brown
Autumn shades, not red and not gold
Autumn leaves fly round and round
Twirling toward my feet as they float down
I roll over, half buried in leaves
Nothing closed, all open to feel
The child I could be
My laughs appeal
"Let the child free!
Your heart will then have eyes to see."

This began once
Once, long ago
Once this child I didn't know
I found the child
The child is in me
The child that was asleep

I watch my dreams, I'm
Chasing them now
Laughing, crying
Both somehow
Running like wind
Bright as the sun
And know my childhood's just begun

Laa-a
Laa-aa-a
I...
Was..
A child..
Once...
Laa-a
Laa-a-aa-a
Once...
That child..
Was me...
